«royalscandalcinema» zeigt am 17. Oktober 2019 im Kulturlokal Royal Baden den skandalisierten Kultfilm «Pink Flamingos» – von dessen Regisseur John Waters beworben als «an exercise in bad taste». Eingeführt wird der Film durch die Anglistin, Filmwissenschaftlerin und Kulturjournalistin Murièle Weber.

In the Fin de Siècle the Victorians with their emphasis on the physical body and their belief in physiognomy portrayed aesthetes and perceived homosexuals like Oscar Wilde as ‘other’ through the caricature of their perceived excess and their decaying bodies. Hence, the decaying body became synonymous with the homosexual male body and the excess of the urban centres. When the AIDS crisis hit in the 1980s the bodies of homosexuals were again portrayed as decaying because of their perceived excess with sex and drugs. Susan Sontag wrote in AIDS as Metaphor «[AIDS] confirms identity» (110) meaning that illness in the 1980s outed closeted gay men through the symptoms shown on their bodies and the connection of AIDS with homosexuality and the excess of sex and drugs.
